'Civil servants must support gov't to realise national aspirations'

Civil servants, particularly educators must support the government of the day to realise the aspirations planned in national education issues, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said all civil servants in the country were bound by the rules set under the general orders and they needed to comply with the policies set by the government.

"Never use schools and educational institutions as a political medium because this contradicts the existing policies. Schools, classrooms and lecture halls cannot be used as a political platform," he told reporters in Malacca today.

He said this after closing the Asia Urban Youth Assembly Conference (AUYA) in conjunction with the 17th International Convention of Malacca Twin Cities.

It was also attended by Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron and Malacca Historic City Council mayor Zainal Hussin.

Khairy was asked to comment on Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid's statement that teachers who supported the opposition and criticised the government should quit their profession.

He added the education sector was not a matter that could be politicised at anyone's whims as it could bring an adverse impact on the country's national system.

In another development, he hoped other states could emulate Malacca in placing the young people in the local authorities, which needed to appoint youths as councillors to voice their views and concerns directly.

Khairy also said Malaysia was prepared to host the ninth World Urban Forum expected to be held in Kuala Lumpur next year.

The three-day AUYA conference which ends tomorrow is attended by over 300 youth bodies from 24 Asian countries, including China, India, Indonesia, South Korea Selatan, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.
