There is no provision in law for someone to be detained because be posseses “unusual” wealth, said Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yong.

Furthermore, he pointed out if a PKR Youth leader can be detained over this, then many politicians should also suffer the same fate.

Yong, who is a lawyer, was commenting on the detention of Ampang PKR Youth chief Adam Rosly by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“It is widely reported that he is arrested due to his 'unusual' wealth.

“I don't think there is any provision in (the law) that a person can be arrested due to his 'unusual' wealth,” he said in a media statement.

Yong said it would be unjustifiable if a person is arrested merely because he lives in a luxurious house, drives big cars and wears expensive watches.

“If that is the case, many politicians out there can be investigated or arrested,” he added.

Adam, 28, the special officer to PKR Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, was reported to have been detained after he turned up for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday.

This follows Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos questioning the source of Adam's wealth and publicising the fact that the latter owns a large house in Ampang.

'Explain actual offence'

Yong said the MACC Act stipulated that a person can be arrested if he committed an offence under sections 16 to 23.

Most, he said, are detained under Section 16, which states, “Any person who corruptly solicits or receives or gives any gratification for himself or for any other person as an inducement doing or forbearing to do anything in respect of any matter commits an offence.”

Yong urged the MACC to disclose what specifically is Adam being detained for.

"I am not questioning the integrity or professionalism of MACC, but they should inform exactly what are the related wrongful engagementS or gratification or unlawful activities under the laws committed by Adam.

“Otherwise, by arresting Adam due to his 'unusual' wealth, it would give the public a wrong perception,” he added.
