Opponents of Act 355 may suffer Ahok's fate, warns PAS
PAS has issued a warning to those who oppose the Islamist party's bid to strengthen syariah courts in Malaysia by drawing a comparison with the outcome of the Jakarta governor election in Indonesia.
Information chief Nasrudin Hassan said Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama's failure to retain his governor post signalled the rise of Islam in the republic.
The ethnic Chinese Christian governor had come under fire for allegedly insulting Islam, and massive protests were held against him.
Noting that there is a lesson in this for Malaysian politicians, Nasrudin said: “When you insult Islam, do not think Muslims would not react by rejecting you as a leader. The Jakarta governor election proves this.”
The PAS leader pointed out that a similar sentiment was on the rise among Muslims in Malaysia, with regard to the move to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355)...
