The Star lands in soup with Home Ministry; 'Proton won't be like Perwaja'

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

The Star in hot water over 'terrorist' front page

Newspaper The Star's editor-in-chief will be summoned by the Home Ministry to explain its Saturday front page, which featured a picture of Muslims praying under a headline reading "Malaysian Terrorist Leader".

The daily has apologised and explained it had no intention to link the two, but has been nevertheless condemned by politicians from PKR, PAS, Parti Amanah Negara and Umno, as well as Malay rights group Perkasa.

'Proton won't be like Perwaja'

Responding to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's criticism of the 49.9 percent sale of Proton to China's Geely Automobile Holdings, Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani said the government does not want to see Proton suffer the same fate as Perwaja Steel.

The failed iron ore processing project Perwaja was initiated under Mahathir’s administration.

Other Kinibites

Parti Bebas Rasuah founder Khairuddin Abu Hassan condemned Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, after the latter urged Bersatu veep Hamidah Othman to resign for allegedly masterminding a mass exodus from Bersatu in Perak.

Disputing earlier news reports, activists said Orang Asli residents from Pos Tohoi in Gua Musang are not unanimous in their decision to vacate to make way for the Nenggiri Dam.

Kimora Lee Simmons, the celebrity fashion designer wife of 1MDB-linked banker Tim Leissner, rebutted claims that Leissner bankrolled her fashion brand.

Looking ahead

Sparks are expected to still fly in the Mahathir circle, as Bersatu and Parti Bebas Rasuah squabble over members.

Home Ministry will summon The Star's editor-in-chief today.
