The Land Public Transport Act Amendment to regulate Uber and grab services using e-hailing applications is expected to be tabled for second reading in the Dewan Rakyat in July.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri said the amendment was to ensure that all aspects of the operations and procedures of the services are running smoothly and can be regulated by the government.

"We are in the process of regulating e-hailing for the second reading, that will be at the next Parliament session in July. We have done the first reading in April.

"Once we have the law, then we can put our term and conditions to them. At this moment we cannot really do anything yet, "she told Bernama at Wisma Bernama, Kuala Lumpur.

On April 4, Nancy presented a bill on the e-hailing service in Parliament, which also aimed to ensure that e-hailing service operator would be responsible for adopting the highest safety standards and service quality.

Nancy said when the regulation on e-hailing was passed by Parliament, all the e-hailing drivers must be registered with the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) and would be subject to strict background checks in collaboration with other enforcement agencies such as the police and Road Transport Department.

About the GrabCar service which is selected as the official transport provider for the SEA Games KL2017, Nancy said the opportunity should be fully utilised by the leading provider of transportation services in Southeast Asia.

"The opportunity given will enable them (Grabcar) to provide transportation services not only to the citizens of the country but also foreign tourists. I think they should be allowed to take this opportunity to work together with the SEA Games," she said.

She said he also took a serious view of the passenger safety aspect of the e-hailing service to avoid crime, such as the robbery that occurred recently.
