'We'll see', says MACC of RM9.5m payment to lawyer; cop ignorant of lock-up rules

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

MACC's response to RM9.5 million claim: We'll see

People in high places don't have much to say about this topic and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Dzulkifli Ahmad is no different.

When approached yesterday and asked if the MACC would investigate claims that RM9.5 million was paid to a high-profile lawyer by the prime minister, Dzulkifli said: "We'll see how is the situation later."

Pressure is continuing to mount on Putrajaya to come clean on the matter, since neither the lawyer in question - Muhammad Shafee Abdullah - nor Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak have responded to the allegations.

This has led to PAS, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara demanding that the authorities investigate the allegations.

However, pro-Umno website MyKMU.net has claimed that it would make no sense for Najib to pay Muhammad Shafee the sum if the purpose was to influence the trial, since the decision ultimately lies with the judges.

Shocking testimonies at EAIC hearing

The Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) hearing into the death of S Balamurugan while in police custody heard from a police inspector, who appeared oblivious of new lock-up rules, that the deceased was not freed despite an order from the magistrate.

Another witness testified that he, along with Balamurugan and another inmate, were subject to brutal beatings by another inspector.

The witness claimed that the assailant said: "You are a (gangster) head outside, but I am the (gangster) head inside (the police station)."

SRC has been making loan payments to KWAP

Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) has revealed that SRC International Sdn Bhd - a 1MDB-linked company - has been making regular interest payments on its RM4 billion loan.

KWAP head Wan Kamaruzaman Wan Ahmad said the loan was guaranteed by the government and therefore they were not worried about default.

Meanwhile, KWAP confirmed that it has yet to decide whether to invest in Bandar Malaysia or Tun Razak Exchange - both 1MDB linked entities - as it is waiting to see who will eventually become the master developer.

Looking ahead

Rafizi Ramli will reveal more details on allegedly suspicious payments made by Najib.

Prime Minister Najib will launch the National Broadcasting Digitisation Project in Kuala Lumpur.

The EAIC's hearing into Balamurugan's death continues.
