Health dept: Dengue not cause of trader's death

The Terengganu Health Department (JKNT) denied an allegation that the death of clothes online trader, Muhammad Muzamil Mat Ranizi, 21, was caused by dengue.
Its director, Dr Mohamad Omar said the youth who came from Kampung Gertak 100, Kuala Besut died due to a virus infection which spiralled into other medical complications, including to the kidney and lungs.

“Initially, the victim was diagnosed as suffering from dengue but after being treated at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) , in Kuala Terengganu, following his transfer from the Besut District Hospital, on May 16, he had recovered from the illness,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after attending a launching ceremony for a food safety campaign beginning this Ramadan, in Kuala Terengganu.

However, he said, the condition of Muhammad Muzamil worsened following an infection which triggered other diseases to arise when he was warded for 18 days at HSNZ's emergency unit, and resulting in his death last Friday, at 9.23am.

Subsequently, Mohamad denied a report from a mainstream paper which claimed that the victim's death was brought on by dengue.

To date, Terengganu has recorded only one dengue casualty, an 11-year-old girl, Nur Istinadiana Che Dollah, from Kampung Sentosa.

Meanwhile, an inspection conducted by the JKNT enforcement team on bazaars since early Ramadan found 18 types of food in seven districts containing prohibited items and were unsuitable for consumption.

”Nine of the food were seized from a bazaar in Setiu, four in Besut, three in Kuala Nerus as well as one each in Hulu Terengganu and Dungun. All of the vendors involved were also fined,” said Mohamad.

Currently JKNT has carried out checks on 1,777 food premises at 55 Ramadan bazaars, including on 3,439 food operators throughout the state.
