Umno's top leaders continued to cast doubtd on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's credentials as a champion of the Malay race, with party vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claiming that Mahathir is of Indian ancestry.

Zahid told the Kelana Jaya Umno annual general meeting yesterday the National Registration Department had confirmed that Mahathir's name on an early identity card bore the name "Mahathir a/l Iskandar Kutty".

He also warned Umno members, particularly those in Selangor, not to behave like the proverbial "crabs in a bucket" and to work instead like ants to help build the party.

The same event heard Kelana Jaya Umno division leader Yusoff Haniff blaming urbanites of being "emotional" during the previous elections, resulting in BN's poor showing.

PM warns of 'disaster' if BN loses

Drawing upon the many horror stories following the Arab Spring revolts, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak warned that Malaysia would experience "disaster" should BN be dethroned.

Najib, as Umno president, also believes that Mahathir's departure from Umno will not hurt the party because the party has continued to flourish even after founder Onn Jaafar had left.

Najib lauded the presence of a PAS grassroots leader at the Lipis Umno general assembly.

Meanwhile, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said he believed Mahathir's leadership position in Pakatan Harapan will not steer the coalition off course.

Former Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram warned that the National Registration Department and Zahid, as home minister, might have to face punitive action for disregarding a Court of Appeal judgment on the rights of a child born out of wedlock.
