MACC: No probe on Zahid, Dr M's wealth as no reports lodged

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not investigating the allegations of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad possessing excessive wealth.

According to MACC deputy commissioner Azam Baki, this is because no reports have been lodged with the commission regarding this matter.

"What (would be) the basis of (an) investigation?

“We can't investigate a corruption case without someone making an official report about it," he was quoted as saying by NST Online.

Reiterating that the MACC is governed by law and cannot take action based on “stories”, Azam said once an official report is made, his team would assess the case and open an investigation paper if there is a basis to the report.

"There are a lot of allegations. But the most important thing for us at the MACC is to see if there is really corruption (involved).

“Having a lot of wealth doesn't mean that you are corrupt," he said.

"Any party that wants the MACC to investigate a corruption case must follow our investigation procedures. We can't act outside our jurisdiction," he added.

Last week, Mahathir had claimed that Zahid failed to provide a clear answer on the alleged RM230 million in his bank account when declaring his wealth to the former premier in 1996.

Following this, there were calls for the MACC to investigate Mahathir and his children's wealth.

Zahid has said that he is willing to be investigated and that he had earned his wealth during his time in the corporate sector.
