Although the government may consider looking into forming an RCI on the 1985 Memali incident, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak does not think requests are being made in the right context.

"Personally, what has been asked are not necessary right now. The issue is what happened during the Memali incident... The issue is Memali, not 'Amanat Hadi'," he said to reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

"Amanat Hadi" refers to a speech that PAS president Hadi Awang made during the incident on the violence that led to 14 villagers and four police officers losing their lives.

"When the Memali issue is brought to light, it is often linked by certain parties to 'Amanat Hadi'. What we should be focusing on is whether the government should implement a Royal Commission of Inquiry, that is the issue," he explained.

However, Salleh added, no request has been made yet, even from PAS.

"To my knowledge, PAS has asked (the government) to create an RCI on the Memali incident. However, I have not received any requests.

"When PAS sends in their request, it is up to the government to consider approving it or not. This is the context we have to consider when looking at this issue," he said.

Although there are various views on the matter, Salleh said fairness and justice could be delayed.

"As a principle, fairness can be delayed, but it cannot be denied. What is more important is studying the proposal of the RCI by the government from those concerned."

Salleh was officiating the Information, Communications and Technology Post and Logistics Sector Conference at the Istana Hotel earlier.

During his speech, Salleh called for governments to understand economics and challenges the fourth industrial revolution will bring.

The conference will continue until Sunday.
