Setapak, Wangsa Maju and Sentul identified as drug hot spots

Setapak, Wangsa Maju and Sentul have been categorised as “hot spot” areas in the federal capital due to frequent drug abuse activities that attracts drug addicts.

National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director-general Abdul Halim Mohd Hussin said based on their records, the three areas of the golden triangle were popular among drug addicts as many drug-dealing transactions took place there.

Speaking at a news conference here today, he, however, declined to comment further, and said that AADK and the authorities would continue to monitor all three areas periodically to control the situation.

“AADK will carry out monitoring and inspection from time to time to reduce drug abuse cases because we believe the treatment method is better,” he said.

Earlier, AADK arrested 16 men, aged between 19 and 58, on suspicion of drug abuse in the two-day “Ops Keramat” in Keramat, which ended today.

“Most of those detained are persons under observation (OKP) and we are also tracking other OKPs who are still engaged in drug abuse,” he said.

“Ops Keramat” involved 25 Federal Territory AADK enforcement personnel who also visited the OKP’s residences to review their progress.

Abdul Halim said a further check also found that 12 of the men arrested were tested positive for drugs, including marijuana as well as methamphetamines and opiates.

“Meth-type drugs and opiates are easily found and cheap, hence, AADK detained them as a step to prevent them from continuing to engage in drug abuse,” he said.
