Prosecution chief heads task force on Dzulkifli Ahmad probe

The head of the prosecution division in the Attorney-General's Chambers is leading the special task force set up to investigate the allegations against MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad of having an affair with a woman in Bali, Indonesia recently.

Without mentioning the individuals involved, Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali said the team comprised top officials and were leading all investigations.

"The head of the prosecution division will continue to report any development directly to me ... but so far, I have not been made aware of any progress on the case, and leave the investigation to the police to gather statements from several witnesses, and so on.

"What we have seen on videos gone viral is not yet verified...let's just wait for the result of the investigation...because there are laws in place for (punishing) those who commit an offence...(and) if people make false reports...we also have laws to deal with that," he said.

He said this when met by reporters after receiving an honorary doctor of aw degree in conjunction with the 9th convocation ceremony of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) in Kuala Nerus, today.

The Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and his consort, Sultanah Nur Zahirah, who is also UniSZa Chancellor, attended the event.

Also present were Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, UniSZA vice-chancellor Dr Ahmad Zubaidi Abdul Latif and Terengganu state assembly speaker Zubir Embong.

The governor of South Sulawesi, Dr H Syahrul Yasin Limpo also received an honorary doctorate in management and leadership at the ceremony.

The attorney general's office had on Oct 16 set up a special task force to closely monitor investigations into the offence under Section 498 of the Penal Code for enticing a married woman with criminal intent.

Mohamed Apandi also responded to misunderstandings surrounding the formation of the task force.

"Many people misunderstand the concept of a special task force...the special task force I created is within the Attorney General's Chambers, I felt this special task force was required as it involves allegations which affect integrity...the integrity of one who heads the MACC, (a post) which requires the highest of moral standards.

"So I as the attorney-general and the law practitioner always believe the truth must exist...we do not know whether the matter is pure slander or it’s true, and what's being done now is to seek the truth," he said.
