Singapore MRT train accident leaves 25 injured

An SMRT train knocked into a stationary train at the Joo Koon MRT station today, resulting in 23 passengers and two staff getting injured, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

SCDF said it was alerted at 8.33am to the accident at the station on the west-bound direction towards the Tuas Link. There are five stops to the Tuas Link station from the Joo Koon station.

The Joo Koon station is on the East-West Line, popularly referred to as the Green line, and has 35 stations between the Tuas Link and Changi Airport.

The injured passengers had already been sent to hospitals, SCDF said, adding that many of them sustained minor injuries.

SMRT, the operator, said all trains were running despite the accident but added that passengers might face intermittent delays of 10 to 30 minutes heading towards the Tuas Link station, the last station of the Green Line in the east.

As at 1pm, free bus services were being provided at regular intervals between the Tuas Link station and the Jurong East station where the Green line meets the North-South Line or the Red Line.

The incident happened at the time that the Circle Line, better known as the Yellow Line, was affected by delays which the SMRT attributed to “a signal fault” at about 6am.

After three hours, the SMRT reported that the fault had been cleared but trains and stations on the Circle Line were crowded.

It said that to minimise the congestion, free regular bus services had been provided for the Yellow Line as well.

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system forms the major component of the railway system in Singapore, spanning the entire city-state.

Operators SMRT Corporation and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have said that they are investigating the accident.

“This morning at 8.18 am, a train heading in the direction of Tuas Link Station stalled at Joo Koon Station. At 8.19 am, a second train stopped behind the first faulty train. At 8.20 am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train,” they said in a joint statement.
