Hyderabad clearing out beggars and dogs for Ivanka Trump visit

India's Hyderabad city has removed beggars and poisoned stray dogs as it prepares to welcome United States President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump for a business summit.

Hundreds of beggars have been rounded up by authorities to conceal some of the harsh realities of the southern metropolis before the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, co-hosted by India and the US from Nov 28 to 30.

Foreign women business leaders and celebrities will be among some 1,500 delegates expected to attend the event.

Ivanka Trump, 36, will lead a delegation of American officials and entrepreneurs.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit and the US president's daughter will deliver the keynote address.

According to reports in the Indian media, Hyderabad officials are careful to present a good image of the city, and beggars, a common sight at traffic junctions and religious places in Indian cities, are seen as the biggest nuisance.

The summit's official website describing Hyderabad as "the city of pearls".

There is no denying the rich and glorious history of Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state and an information technology hub, as it was a prosperous princely state under the rule of Nizams in pre-independence India.

Telangana authorities have removed 1,000 beggars to rehabilitation centres, according to the reports.

Municipal authorities have also picked up stray dogs from many areas of the city, Hyderabad newspaper Deccan Chronicle reported, citing animal activists.

Dogs have been found dead or seriously ill with symptoms of poisoning, the activists alleged.
