Bersih wants 100k voters to object to S'gor redelineation

Electoral reforms pressure group Bersih is looking to recruit 100,000 voters in Selangor to register their objections against the redrawing of Selangor's electoral boundaries.

The Election Commission (EC) is currently displaying its proposals for the new boundaries for the second time. The display and objection period ends on Feb 14.

Bersih argued that although the updated proposals were no longer as contentious as before, there was still evidence of significant malapportionment and gerrymandering that had to be addressed.

Objections can only be filed by groups of 100 people and Bersih said it would provide coordination efforts for the objectors.

Those who wish to participate can sign up at one of 12 objection collection centres throughout the state listed here, Bersih said in a statement today.

"It is the duty and right of every voter to protect and ensure that the strength of his or her vote is equally represented across Malaysia.

"Bersih will help to facilitate better coordination and mobilisation of concerned voices in objecting to these unfair electorate boundaries," it added.

After Feb 14, the EC will hold public inquiries to hear from spokespersons of the various groups of objectors.

Selangor is the only state where the EC has yet to complete its public inquiries.

Critics and electoral experts have pointed out that the EC's redrawing of electoral boundaries was aimed at enlarging existing Malay- and Chinese-majority constituencies, which would ultimately benefit the ruling coalition.
