'How can MIC champion Indians with only 9 parliamentary seats?'

How does MIC expect to champion the Indian community's cause when it wants to contest only nine out of 222 parliamentary seats, asked a PKR leader today.

PKR Youth exco member A Kumaresan, in a statement, questioned the logic behind MIC president Dr S Subramaniam's recent statement urging Indians not to be hoodwinked by the opposition's empty promises.

The Segamat MP was quoted saying in news reports that parties like PKR and DAP do not have a clear agenda for Indians, and it is only BN which has laid out programmes and blueprints for the community.

Subramaniam (photo) also revealed that at least 60 percent of its candidates to be fielded in the nine parliamentary seats and 19 state seats it is gunning for in the coming polls, will be new faces.

Kumaresan wanted to know how MIC would fight to elevate the socio-economic status of Indians with such miniscule representation in the government.

"What can they do in the Dewan Rakyat with the least number of MPs? It is the number of seats contested and won by a party which becomes the yardstick of its political influence.

"In this case, MIC is no longer seen as the only party which can champion the Indian community's cause as the number of seats to be contested by Indian candidates from Pakatan Harapan is more than the MIC's," said Kumaresan.

"MIC is seen as a lackey to its master Umno and the political prowess it wields is minimal.

“In fact, without Umno's help, MIC cannot garner urban and Malay votes. This proves that MIC has absolutely no voice when it comes to protecting the Indian community's interests," he added.
