Task force launched to curb sexual crimes against children via internet

The federal police today launched a task force in a bid to curb the spread of sexual pictures, videos and audio recordings involving children on the internet.

The Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children (Micac) Investigations Unit is aimed at probing cases of this nature, apprehending the perpetrators and rescuing victims as well as conducting research on cyberthreats against children.

"Micac will also exchange information with international law enforcement counterparts such as Interpol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in undertaking its duties," CID director Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

There was also a need, he said, to educate parents and children on the potential dangers of online activities.

Micac comes under the Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Department (D11).

"It's our hope that Micac will complement and coordinate efforts with local and international partners in protecting children from sexual abuse and crimes associated with the internet," Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said.
