BN has promised to bring back free plastic bags for shoppers should it recapture Selangor in the coming 14th general election.

Selangor BN information chief Satim Diman said the ruling federal coalition will put a stop to the practice of making shoppers pay 20 sen if they want plastic bags when buying groceries.

"This is part of the BN manifesto, if BN gets back the Selangor government, no more payments for plastic bags. Do you want this?" Satim (centre in photo) said at a dialogue at Ladang Fermanagh in Kuala Langat today.

The federal opposition-led Selangor state government imposed a ban on plastic bags and polystyrene packaging last year in a bid to be more environmentally friendly.

Consumers are required to purchase plastic bags for 20 sen each if they require it. The state government does not collect the 20 sen from plastic bag sales.

Meanwhile, Selangor BN chief Noh Omar was quoted as saying that shops should pay consumers 20 sen if they bring their own bags.

"Businesses should give 20 sen to consumers who bring their own bags, and not charge those who don't bring one but want a plastic bag," Noh was quoted as saying in Berita Harian.

"This way, it will teach consumers about the dangers of plastic bags, which can pollute the environment," he added, saying BN will implement this if it wins the coming polls.

While Noh acknowledged that plastic was bad for the environment, Satim instead proposed that the state government build its own plastic factory.

The Selangor BN information chief said state menteri besar Azmin Ali could have given out free plastic bags if he did this.

"If he (Azmin) really wants to look after the welfare of youths, he should open a (plastic) factory near here (Sungai Pelek), I would do it if I was near.

"A plastic factory owned by the Selangor government, so when we go to shops we don't have to buy plastic bags.

"They shouldn't have to charge 20 sen, they should just build a factory and give it for free. This is the Pakatan Harapan government for you. Do you still want to vote for them?" Satim said.
