Police and authorities are waiting for the forensic report on teenager M Vasanthapiriya three weeks after her death.

The 13-year-old student attempted suicide after she was accused of stealing her teacher's mobile phone, and passed away a week later from brain injuries.

South Seberang Perai district police chief Shafie Samad told Malaysiakini that they had already interviewed the teacher involved, but needed the report before proceeding with any further action.

“There are no updates yet, we are done (with our part), we are just waiting for the forensic report,” Shafie said.

Malaysiakini understands that forensic experts at the Penang General Hospital are in the midst of preparing the report.

Similarly, the Penang Education Department, which is also probing the case, said it had yet to take any action as it was awaiting information from the police.

“The department is waiting for updates from the police before (we) proceed with our internal actions,” its deputy director Mohd Jamil Mohamed said when contacted.

Vasanthapiriya, a Form Two student from Nibong Tebal, on mainland Penang, had attempted suicide by hanging after she was accused of stealing a teacher's mobile phone on Jan 24.

She was hospitalised at the Seberang Jaya Hospital after suffering a brain injury, and slipped into a coma.

She died on Feb 1.

The late teenager’s family has lodged a police report against the teacher involved, blaming her for the incident.

Mohd Jamil confirmed that the teacher remained at the South Seberang Perai Education Office, where she was transferred to following the incident.
