Now that the police have cleared Jho Low of 1MDB links, the authorities ought to assure him that he can return safely, former cabinet minister Rais Yatim said.

"The police chief has announced that Low was not involved in the 1MDB scandal. Congratulations on the swift decision in such a short time.

"It is necessary to provide an assurance that after this, Low can return to Malaysia without any misgivings. Congratulations to the police for their effectiveness," Rais said in a tweet today.

Last night, inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said ongoing police investigations on 1MDB had yet to uncover any evidence that Low had a role in the company.

The police said this following demands for action to be taken against Low following the seizure of the Equanimity by Indonesian authorities on the request of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) had claimed that the superyacht Equanimity was bought by Low using US$250 million in laundered money linked to 1MDB.

The DOJ's court filing indicated that Equanimity was acquired through a string of layered transactions and is ultimately owned by a Cayman Island incorporated company World View Ltd - ostensibly a "trust fund" for Low's family.

Low is known to be a close friend of Riza Aziz, the stepson of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who in turn chaired 1MDB's advisory board with some executive powers.

This is the second time that Rais has weighed in on Low's involvement with the seizure of the Equanimity.

On March 3, Rais panned cabinet minister Salleh Said Keruak for trying to disassociate Low from the seizure of the yacht.
