Johor crown prince quits as FAM president

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has "left" his position as the president of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

In a statement posted on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page titled "History made, it is time", the Johor Crown Prince listed down his achievements since he took on the mantle about a year ago.

"I have restructured local football, lured in sponsors to help contribute to football in the country and prepared a long-term plan for local football with the co-operation of LaLiga.

"I have fought for broadcasting rights for all competing teams in the Liga Malaysia, to help them manage and strengthen their financial stability. History is made when for the first time, all the teams have received between RM1 million to RM3 million annually, so they do not have to be dependent on government funding," reads the post.

The Under 23, 19, and 16 teams have also managed to make history by representing the country in the highest level in Asia, Tunku Ismail said.

However, the national team's recent fall of three spots in a world ranking was a "very big failure", he noted.

This was in reference to the Fifa ranking released today, which showed Malaysia's lowest ever fall to the 178th spot, following a winless run since November 2016.

"With that being said, I think it is time that President of FAM leaves football. Thank you for everything and it has been an honour to me to serve Malaysian football. Good luck.

"To my loved Bangsa Johor and all the fans of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) around the world, my wife, and kids… Daddy's home!" said Tunku Ismail.

The crown prince won the FAM post unopposed and was officially declared as the president on March 25 last year. His resignation comes about 10 days short of his first anniversary as FAM president.
