Army assisting cops in tracking down Palestinian lecturer's killers

The Armed Forces will be assisting the police to track down two suspects who shot dead Fadi Mohammed al-Batsh, the imam and lecturer from Palestine, last Saturday.

Caretaker defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein said both suspects involved in the murder case must be brought to justice.

"We will not give concessions to anyone who violated the law in this country and take advantage of this incident.

"Do not sensationalise this incident and let PDRM investigate," he told reporters after a ‘Leader With The People' programme at SMK Laloh in Kuala Krai, Kelantan, today.

Also present was Kuala Krai Umno division chief Ramzi Ab Rahman who was nominated as BN candidate for the parliamentary constituency in the 14th general election on May 9.

In the meantime, Hishammuddin insisted that the murder incident did not affect the country's security, which was at its best.

"Our police and armed forces have carried out their duties very well over the years in denying the Islamic State terrorists’ menace, which clearly threatened national security," he said.

Batsh, an electrical engineering lecturer, was shot dead outside Idaman Puteri condominium in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur while walking to Surau Medan Idaman for a dawn prayer, about 6am on Saturday.

Two men were said to have waited for the victim before releasing 10 shots to down the 35-year-old man.

Motorcycle found

The high-powered motorcycle believed to have been used by gunmen in the murder was found abandoned near the Danau Kota Lake in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the machine was found in good condition.

“Yes, the police have found the motorcycle believed to have been used by the suspects during the murder.

“However, I cannot divulge details because the matter is still under investigation,” he told reporters after attending the Selangor police contingent-level briefing for the 14th general election.

It is learnt that a passer-by stumbled on the motorcycle near the lake before alerting the police about 1pm.

Fuzi elaborated that apart from the motorcycle, police also obtained the latest clues with regard to the killing, as several individuals had come forward to assist in the ongoing investigations.

“Someone has tipped us off but I cannot reveal that (information).

"I also cannot confirm whether the suspects are still in the country as we do not have the details on their identities, except for the photofit that we have distributed to the relevant parties to help us locate them (assailants),” he said.

Batsh's remains will sent back to his home country tomorrow.

University Kuala Lumpur-British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) Human Resource Department chief Arafiah Aman said the remains would be sent to Surau Medan Idaman, Setapak from the Selayang Hospital at about noon for prayer for the dead after Zohor.

"The remains will then be taken to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to be flown to Cairo, Egypt at about 7pm," she said when contacted by Bernama.

According to Arafiah, the remains of Dr Fadi would be taken by road to Gaza which bordered Egypt.

"This matter has been confirmed by the Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Anwar H al-Agha and he also said that the Egyptian Government has given the 'green light' to the route to be taken,'' Arafiah said.

According to Humanitarian Care (MyCare) CEO Kamarul Zaman Shaharul Anwar, the process of getting approval for transporting the remains to Gaza was done in collaboration with several agencies in Egypt.
