Security outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya is being tightened, with vehicles being searched as they leave the premises.

MACC personnel have been inspecting the boots of vehicles since this morning.

It is uncertain why these checks are taking place, nor can it be ascertained if MACC head Dzulkifli Ahmad is still fully in charge.

He had tendered his resignation as chief commissioner this morning.

A security officer said that Dzulkifli had entered the office earlier today, but left before lunchtime.

A source told Malaysiakini, however, that the procedure was conducted on the directive of the MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki to ensure no confidential documents were being taken out without legitimate authority.

"Azam instructed the security division to impose measures to tighten security at the MACC headquarters.

"Individuals who are leaving the MACC headquarters must be checked at the main entrance to ensure no classified documents (dokumen terperingkat) are brought out without official approval," said the source.

The source added that the added security measures had been imposed from 11pm on May 11.

The graft-busting agency had become a focal point immediately after Dr Mahathir Mohamad was appointed prime minister on Thursday and promised to undertake reform measures.

Last Friday, Mahathir, in an unofficial policy speech, indicated that there may be changes made to the heads of key government agencies.

He had said that his administration would study if the MACC had been fair.

"We will study if the MACC is fair or not. If we find they were biased in any way, including to ourselves (those in Pakatan Harapan), we will have to change them.

"As we promised, the new major heads of government (agencies) will be vetted by Parliament," he said.
