Kemas kindergartens in Kedah will not be closed - Mukhriz

Kindergartens in Kedah under the Social Welfare Department will not be closed down but will instead be beefed-up to give the best service to the people, especially in the rural areas.

Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir said rumours that Kemas kindergartens would be closed down following Pakatan Harapan taking over the state government were untrue and urged the people not to believe them.

“I do not know where these rumours came from, that the new Kedah Harapan government would close down Kemas (kindergartens), they are preposterous lies.

“I have given the assurance that all federal government agencies which benefit the people, would remain and even improved, even if they were set up during the time of BN,” he told reporters at a thanksgiving feast organised by the Jerlun parliamentary constituency at the Jerlun Kemas Community Hall near Kubang Pasu today.

Mukhriz, who was elected as MP for Jerlun and assemblyperson for Jitra in the general election last Wednesday, said the service of Kemas staff will also not be terminated and that they could continue to carry out their duties as usual.

He added that the state government under Harapan was committed to continuing the policies which focus on religious schools in the state as was done during his time as menteri besar under BN previously.

“During my time as MB previously, I gave a lot of assistance to religious schools in Kedah, so now, I will continue the policy,” he said.

Mukhriz also said the state government would review the system of service in villages including the village development and security committees (JKKK) so that the government could give more efficient and effective attention to the problems faced by the people.

He said it was the duty of the village headmen to ensure the villagers were looked after and to look into the complaints at the JKKK level and resolve them.

Earlier, in his speech, Mukhriz urged the people, regardless of their political beliefs, to reunite to develop Kedah to be on par with other developed states.

“I have also asked the federal government to give some preference to Kedah, and they have agreed, and I have also asked PAS and BN (opposition parties in Kedah) to work with us to build this state,” he said.
