A new menteri besar will be appointed in a few weeks, Econimic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali said today.

"The palace had issued a statement yesterday morning, and I clarified this matter where His Majesty (Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah) had consented that I take up the federal post.

"And at the same time, we will discuss with His Majesty on the potential candidates," he told reporters after clocking in at the Economic Affairs Ministry.

"As soon as the palace identifies the name and gives the consent, (the new menteri besar) will be appointed," Azmin said, adding that the process will take a few weeks.

The 54-year-old, who sworn in as the Selangor menteri besar on May 11, had to relinquish his post after taking up the economic affairs portfolio.

However, Azmin will remain as the Selangor menteri besar in the interim, until the transition of power to a new state leader can be carried out smoothly.

Azmin said there are good candidates for the post and the matter will be discussed within Selangor Harapan.

State exco Amirudin Shari has been widely tipped to be the new menteri besar.

The three-term Sungai Tua assemblyperson was appointed exco for youth development, sports, cultural and entrepreneurship development in 2014.
