Umno today confirmed that acting party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and four others are running for the party presidency.

The four are little-known blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz, Rosile Saat, Mohamed Iqbal Maricair and Mohd Yusof Musa @Jamaluddin.

Following balloting at the Umno headquarters this evening after the closing of nominations, the party said the full candidates' list has not been finalised.

Speaking to media, Umno chief secretary for divisions, Norazuwan Aziz, said this is because the candidates may risk being disqualified following the vetting process, which includes checks with the Insolvency Department to see if they are bankrupt.

The party needed to screen the whole list of 615 candidates for central posts and close to 23,000 candidates for 191 divisions, he said.

The party hopes to publish the full list on its portal on Wednesday, Norazuwan added.

Secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was expected to announce the final list of candidates today.

Besides Umno information chief Annuar Musa and ousted Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan, another delegate from Pekan, Mohd Afnalizam Mohd Salim,  nominated himself for the deputy president post.

Meanwhile, eight leaders are racing for the three vice-president posts, but supreme council member Shahidan Kassim who had previously announced his candidacy was not on the list.

A total of 124 candidates will contest for the 25 posts in the supreme council where 12 incumbents will defend their posts.

They are Shahidan, Mustapha Mohamed, Jamil Khir Baharom, Idris Haron, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, Ahmad Shaberu Cheek, Razali Ibrahim, Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Mohd Puad Zarkashi, Azalina Othman Said, Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Bung Moktar Radin.

Other contenders included Lokman Nor Adam, Ahmad Maslan, Hamim Samuri, Ahmad Fauzi Zahari and Noh Omar.

Former Selangor menteri besar Mohamad Khir Toyo, ousted Perak menteri besar Zambry Abdul Kadir, Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man, Johor opposition leader Hasni Mohammad are also among the candidates for the supreme council posts.

Umno wings will conduct their election on June 23 while the main body will hold party poll on June 30.
