One dead, 41 injured as express bus crashes along Karak Highway

A person was killed and 41 others were injured when an express bus overturned at KM33.3 of the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway at about 6.30pm today.

A Selangor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the bus was believed to have lost control before it crashed into the road divider and overturned.

“A fire-engine and firemen from the Selayang Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene after receiving a call from the public at 6.34pm.

“An Emergency Rescue Service (EMRS) team from the Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue station was also rushed to the scene,” he said, adding that all the victims were taken to the Selayang Hospital.

Meanwhile, Gombak deputy police chief Tey Kong Seng, when contacted, confirmed the incident and said that his team was at the scene to carry out investigation.

30 injured in Gerik accident

In a separate incident, 30 people, including a driver, were injured after an express bus skidded at Km 24 of Jalan Raya Timur Barat Gerik-Jeli near Tasik Banding today.

Perak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Ahmad Adnan Basri said the incident occurred about 3pm when the bus, carrying 29 passengers, was travelling from Jeli to Gerik.

“The bus (driver) was believed to have lost control when the vehicle was going down a hill towards a bend before it skidded to the left and crashed into a drain,” he said in a statement here.

Ahmad Adnan said the driver sustained serious head injuries.

Some of the passengers were seriously injured while others suffered from minor injuries, he said.

“The identity and exact number of those injured have yet to be ascertained as quite a number of the victims were already taken to the Gerik Hospital when the investigating officers arrived at the scene,” he said.

Ahmad Adnan said the incident was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
