Controversial deaths reinvestigated; Gobind okays Umno TV debate

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Controversial deaths reinvestigated

Amid an attempt to reopen the case, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak reiterated that he never met Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu, and that her murder case had already been "dealt with."

The bid to have the case reopened is being pursued by Altantuya's father, Setev Shaariibuu, who sought and received Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s support.

Setev also lodged a police report urging the case to be reopened and named Najib's former aide-de-camp Musa Safri – named during the investigation, but never called to the stand.

The cabinet also agreed for the death of Teoh Beng Hock, who fell to his death from the then-Selangor MACC headquarters in 2009, to be reinvestigated.

Najib breaks silence on 1MDB

Najib claimed the hundreds of millions of ringgit found in properties linked to him were "election donations."

He also said he had no knowledge about how his wife Rosmah Mansor's jewellery was paid for.

Najib said he would have taken action when he was prime minister had he knew 1MDB funds were being misappropriated.

The former Umno president also noted that although he expected BN to lose a few seats in the 14th general election, he did not see such a catastrophic defeat coming.

Gobind okays Umno TV debate

Umno deputy president candidate Annuar Musa said he wants the party to be pragmatic and consider all options to defend "race, religion and country."

Presidential candidate Khairy Jamaluddin, meanwhile, promised to form a BN shadow cabinet if he wins.

Khairy also accepted a debate challenge from fellow candidate, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he has no qualms about Umno holding a televised debate between party presidential candidates on RTM.

Tambun Tulang assemblyperson Ismail Kassim, who was a candidate for Perlis menteri besar, quit Umno and is looking to join Bersatu.

The Perlis chapter of Bersatu, however, said Ismail is not welcome to join, as it does not want a recruit a former enemy.

PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah proposed that Umno be dissolved and its members join the Islamic party.

In response, Umno supreme council member Johari Abdul Ghani pointed out that his party has 54 MPs compared to PAS' 18.
