Yoursay: M’sians need to exercise patience on 1MDB probe

YOURSAY | Sentiment will not stand in court and will not help put criminals in jail.

Missing witnesses a stumbling block in SRC, 1MDB probes

The Wakandan: Just thinking aloud about those missing persons wanted by the government. Perhaps there is much that our security people could learn.

Critical witnesses or accused persons being missing should not happen on a regular basis. It unavoidably reflects on their capability and sadly, we are not up to the mark.

Even though we hate Israel so much, but there is no denying how efficient their police and security force can be. Just a few days ago, they had captured their former minister who was a suspected spy while he was in Africa and extradited him to Israel for trial.

Our own Jho Low and other prime suspects in 1MDB should not be allowed to escape the dragnet and this certainly is a challenge to the efficiency of our forces.

Kim Quek: The money trail that ended up in PM Najib Razak’s account was firmly established three years ago, so was the fact that Najib had never returned the RM42 million to the Finance Ministry, of which he was the boss as the finance minister.

That was the reason why MACC had wanted to charge Najib even then. Now that we have former SRC director Suboh Md Yasin as prosecution witness, and the chance to interrogate Najib and Rosmah Mansor to our heart’s content, shouldn’t we have even less reason not to charge Najib now?

Fair Play: We need to be patient. PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to build a watertight case.

Former attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali and the likes of him are nothing more than fringe players.

Once the case has been built without any ground for MO1 (Malaysian Official 1) to wriggle around, Apandi and the likes of him are just a piece of cake, much like shooting fish in a barrel.

It will be interesting how long key players like Jho Low and SRC director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil could stay free long before China and Indonesia extend their cooperation.

Just like we had waited 60 years to change the government, taking a year or so to establish a watertight case is worth the wait and the patience.

Headhunter: Put a reward on their heads. If Nik Faisal is in Indonesia as suspected, a reward will quickly flush him out. Put his picture in the local newspapers. He has nowhere to hide as every Indonesian will be looking for him.

As for Jho Low, let him sweat for as long as possible but time is not on his side. He will get tired of running like a rat one day.

There is no mitigating factor for both of them if they don't surrender themselves, meaning their sentences will be long and they will have to serve out their full terms.

In the meantime, they will live in fear and look over their shoulder every time they hear a sound behind them. It is not hard to imagine the fat boy now waking up in the middle of the night fully covered with dripping sweat.

David Dass: Yes, perhaps a reward should be posted for information on where these two persons are and for their capture.

But then they have much more money to pay for their protection than could possibly be offered as reward.

Maybe if we requested assistance from the Indonesian authorities? Of course, that would already be done.

Thana55: I find it a bit difficult to appreciate that the AG team which cleared Najib is now tasked to charge him.

I hope that a fresh team is now on board to prepare the charge sheet. The old team should gradually be disbanded as they have sold their souls.

PM: 1MDB probe needs to be based on evidence, not sentiment

Quigonbond: I don't understand those out there who are demanding that Najib be prosecuted already. How old is Pakatan Harapan government? Six weeks or so?

It would take months to build a case of this magnitude. There may have been some investigations done already, but as we all know, most of them are stuck in the twilight zone, suspended, unable to proceed once Najib retired the investigation task force.

And what they investigated back there and the magnitude of the problem as we know it today is significantly different.

There are leads to chase, cooperation with other countries to be had, witnesses and persons of interest to be found, invited over for interview or otherwise arrested and/or extradited back to Malaysia.

We must be patient. If anything, we should not allow people like Najib and his ilks to cast doubt that time taken means there's actually no case against him, or time taken means the government is "cooking" information.

It took BN government many years to reach nowhere in their 1MDB investigation. In comparison, if Harapan government can prosecute within a year, we would have made huge progress.

The Wakandan: The PM is right. Sentiment will not stand in court and therefore will not help put criminals in jail. On the other hand, the people are eager for this case to be brought to court as soon as possible and justice meted out.

There is a palpable hint of anxiety,- though this may not be justified - that the longer the preparation of the case drags on, there may be the possibility that these crooks may slip through the fingers of the law. This might be just wishful thinking.

At the end of the day, they will have to face the might of the laws and their wicked deeds exposed in the trial and conviction. That would be the day.

Pakcik Am: The AG can only charge. The finding of guilt or innocence is made by the courts.

Currently, the courts are presided over by persons recommended by the person who is likely to be the accused. Some changes must be made to the composition of the bench first.
