The endless badgering of journalists since Dr Azahari Husin's death made headlines around the world last week, has left the family weary.

Their resentment turned into anger as they accused the media of distorting and manipulating their words to fit the 'terrorist agenda'.

Even the Azahari of the past, before his alleged involvement with international terrorist network Jemaah Islamiah (JI), is made to fit that terrorist personality, said his sisters.

One of them, Suraya Husin ( photo ), the third of 10 siblings, looked tired and drained when met after Azahari's funeral in Jasin, Melaka.

It was past 1am, and she had just seen off large groups of relatives and friends who made up the majority of the nearly 500 people who arrived for the last rites.

"What else do you want to know?" she asked after initially conceding to an interview as she sat inside the family home.

She, as the other family members earlier, stated her refusal to accept the designation of Azahari as a terrorist.

'Nothing to say'

"Is there any point in saying any more about him? I know my brother. Despite everything we tell you reporters about him, you'll turn around and say something else. The whole world is bent on saying what they will about him.

"So what else is there to say? It's like 10 going up against a million. Despite what we say, things won't end there. They'll just keep saying things. So let them say those things. We won't say anything more," she said.

Attempts to assuage Suraya into providing glimpses into Azahari's past, not indications of a violent personality, but fond memories of her brother, also proved futile.

"What's the point in telling you even the good memories? You have taken the good memories and turned them into something negative. Or you've mocked such memories," she said.

Another family member accused the media of misrepresenting their statements.

"Don't tell them anything. They're just going to turn our words into something completely different," she told Suraya, before turning her anger towards the media.

"You're all very good with turning and twisting our words," she thundered.

'Leave us alone'

More approachable was Azahari's brother, Bani Yamin Husin ( left ), who said that given time, the family would relent to more interviews.

"Let things cool down for the moment. Things are pretty hot right now because many news organisations have played us out. Suraya was played out, and she doesn't want it to happen again. Given time, the family may say more," he said.

Another brother, Yusoff ( right ), also asked for the family to be left alone and to gather the pieces of their lives shattered by the ordeal of the past week.

"We would like the matter to rest for now. It's now time to concentrate on (rebuilding) this family," he said as he left the grave.

Azahari, a former university lecturer, was said to a bomb expert and key member of JI, which among others, has been blamed for the Bali bombings.

He was killed in a shootout with Indonesian security forces last week.

His remains were flown in from Jakarta to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last night. The body was then taken to Masjid Jamek for prayers before being buried next to his mother's grave at approximately 10.45pm.
