Datasonic Group has made an RM1 million donation to Tabung Harapan Malaysia.

Group non-executive chairperson Mohamed Hashim Mohd Ali handed the cheque to Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Putrajaya today.

Datasonic Group, through its unit Datasonic Technologies Sdn Bhd, had in April secured an RM270.71 million contract from Home Ministry to supply 9.96 million polycarbonate biodata pages to the Immigration Department.

Polycarbonate biodata pages are used in Malaysian passports and can house a security chip.

The fund was set up by the new Pakatan Harapan administration to provide a legitimate avenue for Malaysians wanting to donate to the government to help ease the national debt.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng have both stated that the national debt and liabilities of the country exceeded RM1 trillion.

As of 3pm yesterday, up to RM133.7 million had been donated to Tabung Harapan.

Lim has said that donations to the fund would be tax-deductible.
