PARLIAMENT | The government plans to table a Racial and Religious Hatred Act to protect both Islam and other religions in the country against offensive remarks.

"(The act) will not just deal with incidences when Islam is insulted but also when non-Muslim faiths are insulted.

"This is to ensure that in this country, all insults against religion and race are forbidden," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa during the ministers' question time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to an additional question from Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau) who had asked how the government would combat insults against Islam on social media.

Ismail had earlier asked the government to what extent it would be able to assure the glory of Islam due to its status as the federal religion.

Mujahid stressed the act would also cover insults against non-Muslim faiths as other religions were free to be practised in the country as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
