Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail urged the Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs and Malay Customs Council (Maips) to conduct a special study on whether it should be made mandatory to close down religious school in Perlis that do not offer the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, who is also Maips president, wanted the Maips education committee to conduct a comprehensive study in the near future to evaluate the matter.
“Maips has received many complaints and requests from parents that their children who are studying in religious schools within and outside Perlis be given the opportunity to sit for SPM.
“For that purpose, they want all operators of religious schools in Perlis to offer SPM,” he said after presenting Maips tithe to the Attaqwa religious school which was received by its principal ustaz Suphachai Fooanant here yesterday evening.
The school has 82 male students and 72 female students specialising in Islamic studies and Arabic language and guided by 22 teaching staff.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said failure to implement the rules would cause the students from such religious schools to be victims of its education system.
”I want Maips to target 2020 to implement the rules fully if the report on the study shows a positive feedback to uplift these religious schools besides enhancing the students’ marketability,” he said.
Hence, he wanted religious schools in Perlis to be required to register with the Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jaips).
He was in Chiangmai at the invitation of the Malaysian Woodball Association (MWA) to receive the flag as organiser of the Woodball Cup World Championship (WCWC) 2020 in Perlis in conjunction with the closing and prize presentation ceremony of the 8th WCWC hosted by the Woodball Association of Thailand in Chiang Mai tonight.
