A PKR lawmaker has maintained his allegation of a plot to prevent Anwar Ibrahim from succeeding Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid is convinced PKR deputy president Azmin Ali is colluding with Mahathir and his trusted advisor Daim Zainuddin to prevent the handover plan agreed to prior to the May 9 general election.

"That's what I'm saying... I mean it.

"Even though it is my observation, it is still a fact...I believe (what) I say is correct," he told Malaysiakini.

Abdullah is aligned to former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, who is challenging Azmin for the PKR number two post.

Pressed for evidence, the Kapar MP pointed out that Daim previously said there was no necessity for Anwar to take over from Mahathir before the 15th general election.

"What does he mean by that? The cooperation between Azmin and him is close.

"I look at the way Azmin and he are doing things, they are trying to stop the consensus agreement among ourselves (Pakatan Harapan) that Mahathir has to step down in two years," he insisted.

Mahathir himself has indicated that the two-year timeframe is flexible, stating on numerous occasions that he would remain at the helm if the people wanted him to do so.

Even so, the premier has repeatedly assured that Anwar will succeed him as prime minister.

A video (see video below) of Abdullah's remarks when campaigning in Seremban and Johor has also gone viral.

In the clip, he talked about his interview with Astro Awani, where he was asked the reason for backing Rafizi instead of Azmin.

“I replied that Azmin is good, but Rafizi is better...

“If you want to see Anwar as prime minister, then Rafizi should be deputy president. If you do not want to see Anwar become prime minister, then vote for Azmin.

“The calculation is simple. Why do I say this? Because he is backed by Daim and Mahathir, who certainly would not permit Anwar to become prime minister.

“This is clear from their statements. That the agreement (for Anwar to take over) is not final. But we wish to remind Mahathir and Daim, your plans are your plans, Allah's plans are greater,” he added.

Anwar was later reported as saying that Abdullah's remarks were his personal views.
