CEP 100-day term ends; radioactive material missing; Senate passes SST

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

CEP 100-day term ends

Now that its 100-day mandate is over, Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairperson Daim Zainuddin said the council will submit its report to the prime minister and also consult him about a possible extension.

He said based on feedback received, he believes that the Finance Ministry should be on top of the list of agencies in need of improved governance.

He also said it is not wise for Pakatan Harapan to deliver on its promise to abolish tolls, given the government’s current financial state.

Radioactive material missing

The New Straits Times reported that a radiological dispersion device (RDD) containing radioactive iridium-192 isotopes has been missing since Aug 10.

However, police have ruled out terrorism as a possible motive, while Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman assured the public that everything is under control and there is no need to panic.

BN-dominated senate passes SST, repeals GST

In a surprising move, the Dewan Negara has passed legislation to replace the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with the Sales and Services Tax (SST), with the backing of BN senators.

BN senator Khairul Azwan Harun and Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said this is to prevent delays in implementing SST, which could further disrupt the government’s cashflow.

However, Khairul suggested that an independent committee should be set up to monitor SST’s implementation, since it is less transparent than GST.

Other Kinibites

Transport Minister Anthony Loke explained that the government had cancelled unpaid Automatic Enforcement System (AES) summons because of lopsided agreements that privatised the collection of the fines.

Bukit Aman is investigating a Sabah police officer for allegedly sexually harassing six of his men and a member of the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).

Looking ahead

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s China visit enters its last day today. He will attend several functions and then board a flight back to Malaysia.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke will be officiating the launch of a new e-hailing service, called “diffride”.

Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid is expected to hold a press conference today. Yesterday, PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim had told him to “correct” his allegation that Mahathir and Daim are plotting against Anwar.
