Police raided the house of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's mother, Rahah Mohammad Noah in Jalan Eaton, Kuala Lumpur, this evening.
According to a police source, the raid took place about 4pm which was about the same time Najib was charged with 25 counts of money laundering and abuse of power at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
It is learnt that the raiding party of 14 men even broke through the ceiling of the house to find possible cash hidden inside but returned empty-handed.
The source said that the raid was a joint operation by Bukit Aman's Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), and Amla (Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001) unit.
"The team was planning to raid Rahah's house since yesterday as there was a tip-off to CCID that Najib had stashed a substantial amount of money in the house.
"The money is believed to be linked to 1MDB. However, they were disappointed as they couldn't find what they were looking for," said the source.
Commenting on the raid, Najib's lead counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah in a text message said: "Yes, very mean of them to scare the poor lady and they found nothing in her house!"
The raid comes amid the plethora of charges the authorities have slapped the former premier with, in regards to his alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
Earlier this evening, Najib claimed trial to four charges of abuse of power under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, while the remaining 21 charges under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 (AMLATFA) were for receiving, using and transferring to other entities, illegal proceeds.
This pertains to the US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) found in his Ambank personal account, which the authorities claim came from 1MDB. Najib, however, has alleged that the money came from Saudi Arabian sources and has denied any wrongdoing.
Najib has also previously been charged with seven counts of money laundering and abuse of power, in regards to the RM42 million found in his personal account, from SRC International - a former subsidiary of 1MDB.
The Sarawak Report has previously reported that Najib had paid RM17 million to the Yayasan Rahah Foundation, established by his mother, with money which allegedly originated from 1MDB.
