Klang hospital probes baby's death after parent cries foul

Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang is urging members of the public not to make any speculation as it completes its investigation into a parent's allegation that the hospital was responsible for the death of his four-month-old son.

This comes after the child's father lodged a police report at Klang station last week, in which he alleged that his son, who was born with irregularities involving his heartbeat, had died when undergoing treatment at HTAR.

In the police report, sighted by Malaysiakini, the father alleged that an HTAR doctor had insisted the child be warded even though informed by the parent that doctors at another public hospital had advised that the son's condition was not critical and surgery could be put off till the child has grown.

The father then claimed that the HTAR doctor ignored the father's protest and that a Ryle's tube - which is a nasogastric tube that carries food and medicine to the stomach through the nose - was inserted.

It was claimed that the boy began to have trouble breathing and died two hours after receiving treatment.

In its statement, dated Sept 19 and uploaded onto the hospital's Facebook page, HTAR said that the child was brought for a follow-up appointment on Sept 12 and was warded on the same day when the consulting doctor determined the child's condition to be "unsatisfactory".

"HTAR followed all procedures that have been set when treating the victim. However, the victim died on Sept 15, 2018, at 11.50pm," it said.

It added that a post-mortem was conducted on Sept 18 to determine the cause of death, but did not elaborate on its findings.

"We (HTAR) sympathise with the death... further investigations are being carried out and we ask the public not to speculate, and to give room to HTAR to complete its investigations," it added.

Klang Selatan district police chief Shamsul Amar Ramli confirmed the father's police report but did not respond when asked if police were investigating the case.
