Candidate: I want to represent all Malaysians, not just PD folk

PD POLLS | Independent candidate Stevie Chan Keng Leong, who has announced his intention to contest the upcoming Port Dickson parliamentary by-election, said he wants to represent everyone in the country, not only the people in the constituency.

The 51-year-old social media personality said this was because he believed that the people had voted against political arrogance, nepotism and politicians who put their personal interest above the people's interest.

“I want to be an independent voice in Parliament representing as many common interests of the people, not only in Port Dickson but also the whole of Malaysia.

“...free from political patronage, entitlement and vested interest,” he said in a statement here today.

Chan said he had always upheld the Federal Constitution that should also be defended and respected by all parties.

“I also understand that bumiputera rights have been enshrined in the Federal Constitution and are protected by the Malay rulers and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said.

He also stressed that the poor, marginalised and less fortunate should always be assisted regardless of race and religion.

Education is the best form of investment to improve social mobility and should also be made free, he added.

The by-election has been necessitated by the resignation of incumbent MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, 68, of PKR, on Sept 12 to pave the way for PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim to contest the seat and become an MP.

The Election Commission has set nomination for Saturday and polling for Oct 13.

In the 14th general election on May 9, Danyal defeated VS Mogan of Barisan Nasional and Mahfuz Roslan of PAS with a majority of 17,710 votes.
