MACC chief commissioner Shukri Abdull today suggested the government impose whipping punishment on graft offenders.

Shukri who was reinstated into the commission after Pakatan Harapan took over Putrajaya in May, said this would serve as a deterrent to those who commit corruption, and the general public.

"I am a person who really hates graft, I am allergic to people who are involved in corruption.

"I fully support the notion by (Prime Minister) Tun (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) when he said that graft offenders should be sentenced to death if the law allows for it.

"In China, they practice this. But in Malaysia, we are not going to that extent. Even for other offences that has capital punishment, Malaysia is going towards abolishing the capital punishment," he said during a special interview aired by Bernama Radio and MACC.FM this morning.

Shukri noted that existing anti-corruption laws only provide a maximum of 20 years' jail for those found guilty of graft.

"If you ask for my perspective, I believe that we should have whipping punishment (for corruption offences) so that it would serve as a lesson to those who commit the offence and to the rest of the public. I would like to suggest this if the government agrees," he said.

Under the MACC Act 2009, the general penalty for any corruption-related offence is a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and a minimum fine of RM10,000, or five times the value of the bribe (whichever is higher).
