The Terengganu Tourism Department is set to push new guidelines for event organisers hosting stage events, according to a report in The Star.

Although the state exco for tourism, culture and information technology is only expected to announce the full details at a press conference later today, the report lists the 11 rules stipulated in the guidelines based on a copy that was circulated to the press.

Among these is a rule that men can perform as singers and dancers in stage shows, while women can only perform to female audiences behind closed doors.

The guidelines also state that there cannot be “excessive intermingling” between male and female performers onstage, although children’s shows would be exempted from the gender separation rule.

Event organisers are also to ensure that men and women audience members who are not related to one another (bukan mahram) cannot mix freely.

According to an image of the guidelines contained in the report, daytime musical performances must not overlap with prayer times, while those performed at night must only begin after Isyak prayers and not stretch past midnight.

On Thursday nights, performances are prohibited altogether until Friday prayers the next day.

Furthermore, the guidelines also state that any music performed should not be accompanied by "excessive sound instruments that would influence viewers/listeners to follow its beat”.
