Putra Perdana mining pool tragedy: Six firemen, teen, laid to rest

The six firemen, and the teenager, all of whom drowned in a mining pool in Putra Perdana in Selangor on Wednesday, were buried in their respective hometowns, yesterday. 

Mohd Fatah Hashim, 34, one of six firefighters who was killed during the search and rescue (SAR) operation, was laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery, Jalan Kampung Baru Beserah, Kuantan at about 4pm.

About 200 people consisting of firefighters, family members and well-wishers paid their last respects. He is survived by his wife Nor Nadia Kamaluddin, 29, and two children - Nur Medina Aisyah, three and Muhammad Meqa Al Asyraf, one.

Meanwhile, in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, the remains of another fallen firefighter, Muhammad Hifdzul Malik Shaari, 25, was laid to rest at the Kampung Kubang Terap Muslim Cemetery.

Van carrying his remains from the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station arrived at his family home at about 4.13pm yesterday for funeral prayers led by Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob.

Elsewhere, the remains of his colleague, Izatul Akma Wan Ibrahim, 32, also from Kelantan, was laid to rest at the Kampung Lobok Setol Muslim Cemetery in Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, about 7pm last night.

About 500 family members, villagers and colleagues accompanied his remains to the cemetery.

In Tawau, Sabah, the remains of another firefighter, Mazlan Omarbaki, 25, was laid to rest at the Kampung Batu Payung Muslim Cemetery here at 7.30pm, while in Matu, Sarawak, more than 500 residents of Kampung Tian and the surrounding area paid their last respects to Yahya Ali, 24, one of the six deceased. 

Another firefighter killed last night was Adnan Othman, 33, from Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, the remains of 17-year-old Muhammad Ilham Fahmy Mohammad Azzam, 17, who drowned in the mining pool in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong, was buried at 11.25pm last night.

His body was found by a rescue team at 5.45pm yesterday evening about 800 metres from where he was reported to have fallen.

In Kota Bharu, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the Selangor government will work out a zakat contribution to the families of the six divers.

Earlier, Amirudin had announced that the Selangor government had also agreed to give a contribution of RM20,000 to each family and heir of the firemen who had perished in the incident.

He said the contribution was made to appreciate the deeds throughout their service besides easing the burden of the family members affected.

In the incident at about 9.15pm on Wednesday, the six divers were reported to be in the water for only five minutes to look for the 17-year-old youth who was reported to have fallen into the pond earlier that day. 

However, a swift current suddenly appeared causing all the victims to be entangled in the rope linking them to each other, resulting in their drowning.
