DPM discusses aid for Sulawesi with Indonesian counterpart

Humanitarian aid for victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Central Sulawesi was among the top topics in Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s Tuesday meeting with her Indonesian counterpart Jusuf Kalla in Jakarta.

In the meeting, which took place at the Indonesian vice-president’s office in conjunction with Wan Azizah's one-day working visit to the republic, the deputy prime minister extended sympathies on behalf of Malaysians and the government to the victims of the twin disaster that struck the province on Sept 28.

She said Malaysia would offer a helping hand to alleviate the burden of the victims.

She also noted that aid offered by Malaysia and accepted by the Indonesian government included making available an A400M cargo plane and two C130H aircraft belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force to ferry aid to the beleaguered province.

"The Malaysian government also contributed RM1 million and set up the Sulawesi Earthquake/Tsunami Disaster Fund (TBGBTS) on Oct 4 to help the victims," said Wan Azizah, who also chairs Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Committee.

She added they also discussed matters of common interest to further boost Malaysia-Indonesia ties.

This is her first working visit to Indonesia since becoming deputy prime minister on May 21 following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the 14th general election on May 9.

Earlier, Wan Azizah, who is also women, family and community development minister, paid a courtesy call on Indonesian President Joko Widodo and held a meeting with the country's Women Empowerment and Children Protection Minister Yohana Susana Yembise.

Her packed itinerary includes a visit to the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Management for a first hand look on activities to assist the victims of the twin disaster.
