NGO questions authorities' readiness in monitoring Penang mega projects

An NGO today questioned the readiness of the public authorities in handling upcoming mega projects in the wake of a recent worksite incident.

The Citizens Awareness Chant Group (Chant) said the worksite incident has made many Penangites wonder whether the authorities, including the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Public Works Department (JKR) and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh), are prepared for upcoming projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) and Penang Structure Plan 2030.

Chant advisor Yan Lee also questioned how the authorities are monitoring all these upcoming projects in Penang and what their role is in ensuring the safety of the people of Penang.

"Are they (MBPP, JKR and Dosh) ready to monitor all these upcoming projects and do they have enough engineers to do so for the safety of all the rakyat," he said to reporters in George Town today.

Yan said there are numerous upcoming projects in Penang which require proper monitoring by the authorities to ensure that all the projects will bring benefit to Penangites.

It was reported last week that 14 25-metre-long concrete beams at the RM545-million Jalan Bukit Kukus paired road project fell onto a slope.
