Tian Chua: Withhold confirming PKR polls' results pending probe

PKR vice-president Tian Chua has urged the party's election committee to withhold confirming all polling results until an impartial and comprehensive probe is carried out into the chaos and irregularities.

He said the inquiry must be conducted to investigate all possible flaws, loopholes and weaknesses in the ongoing party elections.

“Oversights and erroneous calculations must be rectified thoroughly in order to overcome the credibility discrepancy of the party election process,” he added.

Expressing sadness over what has transpired, the former Batu MP said the misconduct of certain individuals has affected the public's perception of the party.

“PKR aspires to be an open, progressive and democratic party, yet the inability of the party's secretariat office and election committee to administrate a smooth and professional election process has resulted in party members and the public at large casting doubt on the integrity of the elections.

“It seems that some ambitious individuals in the party are willing to pursue power or position at any cost even at the expense of the party's public support.

“Over the last few weeks, we have seen a lot of unruly behaviour, such as mobilising fake members to vote, creating violent havoc in the voting stations etc. Not to mention making unfounded allegations and vicious personal attacks against other comrades,” he said in a statement.

However, Tian Chua did not mention names with regard to his allegations.

The PKR leader, who has been with Anwar Ibrahim since the Reformasi era in 1998, also welcomed the latter's warning and call for a thorough investigation into the matter.

“I hope the disciplinary committee and the election committee take his advice seriously.

“They have to take prompt and firm action against those individuals who have crossed the line. As Anwar said nobody should invoke their position of power to influence the election.

“The election committee must not be intimidated by these individuals and if any evidence of abuses is found, their candidacy should be struck off. This will serve as a warning to others,” he added.
