Perak flood victims increase to 300; 101 evacuated in Penang

Perak opened its fourth flood relief centre in the Larut Matang Selama district last night.

According to a statement from the State Disaster Management Secretariat, the Kampung Matang Gelugor Community Hall is the latest relief centre to be opened.

It was opened after opened after flood water began entering in residents’ houses in Kampung Matang Pasir, it said.

The statement stated that the number of flood victims had increased to 300 people (86 families) at the four relief centres in the flood-affected districts, comprising Larut Matang Selama, Kampar and Hilir Perak, compared to 221 people from 68 families yesterday.

In Larut Matang Selama, the relief centres are at the Kampung Matang Gelugor Community Hall and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Temerlok in Trong.

“The flood victims in Larut Matang Selama remained at 47 people (14 families) from four villages, Kampung Temerlok, Kampung Tengah, Kampung Tebok and Kampung Matang Pasir,” he said.

The number of evacuees sheltered at Kampar also remained unchanged with 46 people (14 families) from two villages namely Kampung Tebing Tinggi and Kampung Pulau Pisang, who are being accommodated at Kampung Tebing Tinggi community hall.

Meanwhile, in Hilir Perak, there are to 227 flood evacuees (58 families) from Kampung Batu 9 staying at the relief centre at SK Changkat Jong.

Meanwhile, in Penang, 101 people from 28 families were evacuated yesterday in Teluk Kumbar near Georgetown, and Titi Teras and Balik Pulau due to floods caused by heavy rain overnight.

Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said 89 people from 25 families were moved to the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Kumbar when floodwaters began to rise up to about one metre.

He said 12 people from three families were accommodated at a relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Titi Teras.

“As at 11 am today, the floods have receded and evacuees are expected to be allowed to return home this evening,” he said.
