Azmin scores victory in Johari's homebase, widens lead over Rafizi

PKR POLLS | PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali has widened his lead in the party polls after Kedah strongman Johari Abdul struggled to deliver votes for Azmin's challenger Mohd Rafizi Ramli.

After 10 out of the 15 divisions in Kedah voted today, Azmin won six divisions and emerged with a 117-vote advantage in the state, garnering 1,148 votes to Rafizi's 1,031 votes.

Johari, who is vying for one of four PKR vice-president positions and is part of Rafizi's team, and was expected to deliver the votes for the latter.

However, Johari merely came in at fourth place (1,306 votes) in the vice-president race behind contenders Nurul Izzah Anwar (1,620), Zuraida Kamaruddin (1,437) and Tian Chua (1,308).

He stands a chance tomorrow to make up for it when his home division and constituency Sungai Petani – along with the Jerai, Merbok, Kulim Bandar Baru and Padang Serai divisions – go to the polls.

Following today's results, Azmin has extended his lead in the overall tally with 35,531 votes to Rafizi's 34,153 votes.

Overall, the top four vice-president contenders – Nurul Izzah (39,624), Zuraida (31,348), Xavier Jayakumar (27,198), and Tian Chua (25,169) –remain unchanged.

The Kedah vote is a repoll after the election last month ran into technical difficulties.

Team Azmin pulls ahead in Wanita chief race

Round one of the Kedah polls placed Haniza Talha in pole position in the PKR Wanita chief race, garnering 570 votes to Fuziah Salleh’s 535.

Haniza, who is on Azmin’s team, extended her overall lead to 2,860.

Also from Azmin team was Dr Daroyah Alwi, who pulled further forward against her contender Rodziah Ismail with 552 votes to Rodziah’s 507 in Kedah.

Meanwhile, in the youth chief race, Rafizi’s protégé Akmal Nasir proved slightly more popular in Kedah with 371 votes to Afif Bahardin’s 368 while Najwan Halimi managed just 39 votes.

Afif continues to lead the overall race with 8,311 votes.

For the deputy youth chief position, Azmin’s political secretary Hilman Idham trumped his contenders, Raymond Ahuar and Naqiuddin Nazrin, with 438 votes.
