Quit blaming me and save the economy, Najib tells gov’t

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged the government to stop finding fault with him and his past administration, and focus instead on saving the country's economy.

Najib said the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government has been in power for 200 days, but still lacks clear direction for the economy.

At the same time, he said the challenges facing the economy are many, and that several economic indicators are on the downtrend.

“I hope the Harapan government’s tendency to blame Najib, to blame BN, will no longer be their approach.

“Their entire focus and effort should be on how we can save the country’s economy, how we can protect the interests of the rakyat, and how we can face this more challenging economic environment,” he said in a video address through his official Facebook account today.

The Pekan MP pledged that BN will play its role by being a constructive opposition.

Among the issues raised in Najib's almost ten-minute long address included the diminishing GDP growth rate, the falling value of the ringgit, and declining tourist arrivals.

He said he is also concerned by the International Monetary Fund’s prediction that 2019 will be a challenging year due to uncertainty in world trade, which would put pressure on the economies of countries like Malaysia.

At the same time, he said Harapan’s economic direction had been a series of “flip-flops”, rebranding of BN-era policies, and allegedly misleading statements such as the size of the national debt.

Najib had maintained that the size of the debt is RM686 billion, and claims that the documents published for the 11th Malaysia Plan’s mid-term review support this.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had cited an RM1 trillion figure, that includes other liabilities such contingent liabilities that had been realised.
