Wee Ka Siong is new MCA president as Gan concedes defeat

MCA POLLS | Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong, MCA's sole elected representative in the Dewan Rakyat, is now the party's new president.

Wee, who contested for the presidency after one-term as deputy president, emerged victorious in a three-cornered fight.

Wee's opponents were Beruas MCA Youth chief Ngoo Teck Keong and Kluang MCA chief Gan Ping Sieu.

However, the contest was seen as a two-horse race, between Wee and Gan, who was backed by former MCA president Chua Soi Lek.

Wee, when addressing the press at the MCA headquarters tonight after his victory, described the win as "overwhelming" and a boost for the new MCA team.

The new MCA president acknowledged Gan's congratulatory call and urged all members, including those who were defeated, to close ranks.

"We should practice matured politics and put the interest of the party above all else," he said.

Asked if he will be appointing his defeated opponents into the MCA leadership, Wee said he will deliberate the matter once results for all positions become available.

Earlier, Gan, in a Facebook posting, conceded defeat even though the vote-counting process was not yet completed after Wee achieved an unassailable lead.

"I have spoken to Wee and congratulated him for becoming the new MCA president," said Gan.

Meanwhile, Wee's running mate, Mah Hang Soon, is also set to win the MCA deputy president position after achieving a strong lead over his opponent Tee Siew Kiong.

Wee's allies Tan Teik Cheng, Ti Lian Ker, Lim Ban Hong and Yew Teong Look are also expected to win the four vice-president positions.

Yesterday, Nicole Wong was elected as the first woman MCA Youth chief. Wong is also aligned with Wee.

MCA suffered a disastrous defeat in the 14th general election, seeing its seven MPs reduced to one in the Dewan Rakyat.
