Yoursay: Shukri, fix MACC so that we can all be proud M'sians

YOURSAY | 'Move M'sia up the Corruption Perception Index to a level we will be proud of.'

'Ashamed', MACC chief pretended to be Indonesian

Hamster Huey & The Gooey Kablooie: During Najib Abdul Razak's reign, the Research Division of the Prime Minister’s Department aka Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) had a pretty decent domestic spy network.

Top-ranking MACC officers were constantly under surveillance and even Mohd Shukri Abdull, the man in charge of the SRC International investigations, was not spared when two agents followed him all the way to Washington DC and New York.

Their lives and the lives of their families were in constant danger. They were living in fear. Given this, would you make a police report?

Pokok Kelapa: The MACC chief was ashamed to call himself Malaysian?

I am proud to call myself Malaysian because we threw out a regime in a civilised way, when many in power did nothing but sat and watched, or rather enjoyed themselves, while the rakyat suffered.

Proarte: "I don’t like to say anything that is not true,” said MACC chief Shukri.

So Shukri, why did you lie and say you were Indonesian? Please be morally consistent if you want to be an effective graft-buster.

Sinan Belawan: Malaysia's position/ranking was 62 while Indonesia was 96 in the Corruption Perception Index 2017, New Zealand 1, Singapore 6, Thailand 96, Philippines 111, Vietnam 107, Cambodia 181.

Malaysia's ranking was much better than Indonesia in CPI 2017. But Shukri prefers to be known as Indonesian?

Wira: I had been telling others while we were abroad that we were Singaporean when Najib was prime minister.

Anonymous_3e12: Indeed, there is very little to be proud of as a Malaysian.

The ex-prime minister is a kleptocrat, the ex-“first lady of Malaysia” allegedly stole from schoolchildren; 11- to 15-year-old girls are married off; two Malaysia Airlines planes disappeared or were shot down; the ex-deputy prime minister could not even pay his RM800,000 credit card bill with his own money; the 1MDB sovereign state wealth fund was mired in losses; a Year Six pupil of our sekolah kebangsaan gets about four hours of Islamic studies and only two hours of science per week.

There’s a lot to be ashamed of.

Caripasal: It is very wrong for someone holding such a high position in MACC to lie about his nationality. No doubt the country was full of <expletives> at that time. However, only a traitor would claim that he was Indonesian.

Furthermore, like then Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, why did he keep quiet at that time? I am sure he would have continued to keep quiet if BN had won the last election.

He is not fit to helm MACC. A total revamp of MACC is urgently needed to appoint men with integrity and capability.

Where is the reform of MACC promised by Pakatan Harapan? How can Harapan allow an ‘Indonesian’ to lead our MACC? How can we trust him to not betray our country if he is under siege?

Anon: Shukri, it was as though saying that being Malaysian would cause you so much pain, you had to say you were Indonesian.

I go everywhere and I am proud to be Malaysian. Never have I ever, during my travels, had anyone say Malaysians are kleptocrats, corrupted or anything of that sort. This man should resign from his post.

Anonymous_1534058315: I know Shukri was being metaphorical (about being Indonesian). Keep up the good and noble work of reining in crooks, thieves and criminals.

Headhunter: The MACC chief must not forget that MACC was also complicit by covering up for the crooks who raided the country’s finances.

Things were so obvious to all and sundry in the country and yet MACC was like "I see nothing, I hear nothing". As a result, MACC’s reputation is still rotten today.

Wsoi: Shukri admitted he wants to complete his unfinished task in MACC. Let him clean up the cases one by one without fear or favour.

After the clean-up, he can retire and appoint a person with integrity, and most importantly, the competency and professional skills and knowledge to bring MACC up to a global standard.

Blessed Malaysian: Prior to GE14, I was ashamed to claim I am Malaysian when overseas. But now post-GE14, I am proud to be Malaysian. Is that wrong?

Fair Minded Senior Citizen: I would be ashamed to say I am not a Malaysian in good as well as bad times. You must be loyal and proud of your country even though your politicians are a bunch of crooks.

Most of the populace are decent citizens. Defend the country, not the crooks. I am surprised by Shukri’s statement. And he seems very proud of it.

Monty: Not just you, Shukri, almost everyone I know was ashamed of the corruption in the country. And that we had a prime minister who was so very corrupted and was very much implicated in a murder case.

And let's not mention here how we felt about the First Lady of Malaysia.

But here is the challenge for you: Clean up the mess and move Malaysia up the Corruption Perception Index to a level Malaysians will be proud of.

After all, you have the full cooperation of PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his new government.

Anonymous_7d1ca773: MACC chief, what matters to Malaysians now is your achievement after GE14 in successfully going after the chief kleptocrat, his accomplices, and do more to bring all the corrupt BN fellows to court.
