Tahfiz centre fire: 214 exhibits produced in court

A total of 214 exhibits on the fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre were produced in the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

Bukit Aman head of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Unit (D7C) DSP Khairil Idzwan Ahmad, 42, said the exhibits included bone, urine and blood specimens of the victims, and also the blood specimens of their next of kin.

“I received all the exhibits and they are in good condition as no tampering was made by me on the specimens concerned,” he said during the examination-in-chief by the prosecution, conducted by deputy public prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz at today’s trial of two boys charged with murdering the victims in the fire.

The two boys, who were then aged 16, were jointly charged with the murder and causing the death of the 23 people at the Pusat Tahfiz Darul Ittifaqiyah in Jalan Keramat Hujung, Kampung Datuk Keramat between 4.15 am and 6.45 am on Sept 14, 2017.

They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same law, and face the mandatory death sentence if found guilty.

Khairil Idzwan , who was then Crime Investigation Division head at the Wangsa Maju police station, said he also received pieces of the victims’ personal belongings, such as watches, rings and clothing.

Kuala Lumpur prosecution director Othman Abdullah also prosecuted in the case, while the boys were represented by lawyer Haijan Omar.

The hearing before judge Datuk Azman Abdullah continues on Jan 29.
